The Cameroonian government is beefing up security in an attempt to curtail threats to its citizens due to increasing insecurity in neighbouring Nigeria, Chad and the Central African Republic (CAR).
According to Edgar Ngo’o, Cameroon Defence Minister, the government would recruit 4,850 men and women as soldiers into the Cameroon Armed Forces (CAF) and the national gendarmerie.
He said that the vast recruitment exercise was coming because of rising insecurity in Cameroon’s land borders with Nigeria, Chad and the Central African Republic (CAR).
Nigeria, which borders Cameroon to the West, is fighting the Boko Haram insurgents in the Northern part of the country, especially in Borno State where the terrorists has its stronghold. Attacks on civilians, including school children, have forced many to flee into neighbouring countries including Cameroon.
Violence in Central African Republic, one of the poorest nations in the world despite the abundance of mineral resources, has displaced about a million.
