Five persons, including a 64-year-old man have been arrested by the Bayelsa State Police Command on Thursday, May 8, 2014 for defilement of children between ages 10 and 13 and also for cult-related violence.
The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hillary Opara, also added that following reported cases of cult-related violence and killing of about four persons along the OMPADEC, Opolo,and Ekeki areas of Yenagoa a 22-year-old notorious cultist, populary known as Small Boy Danger was also arrested.
According to him, ” The upsurge in cult-related killings in the area was sad and unfortunate, as it had spurred the police into a series of patrols and security operations that led to major arrests.
“On the arrest of the paedophiles, Opara disclosed that though past arrests and prosecution of rape and child defilement cases were frustrated by lack of will by parents of victims to prosecute, the police and the Bayelsa State Government had set up a committee backed by law to ensure that cases of rape, violence against women and girl child were properly prosecuted and about 20 persons so far has been arrested by the State Police for allegedly defiling underage girls and for cult-related violence.
He further revealed that the marine component of the Nigeria Police had engaged some sea pirates in a shoot-out and arrested 14 suspects along the Igoli River and the Brass/Snake Island axis of Brass Local Government Area of the state.
Mr Opara urged market women, motor park operators and passengers to be more vigilant and report all suspected persons, strange movements or objects noticed around the park to security agents.
